Quick answer

In Dumpling Dash, a MEGA BAO forms when eight small dumplings are bunched closely together a little way up the street. The eight squish into one big bun that keeps their full count, is tougher than all eight put together, flattens chopstick soldiers on contact and hits the fortress and bosses extra hard. To make more, keep a steady, dense stream, upgrade fire rate, grab chili oil and steer around the tiny spoon, which stops merges while it lasts.

The first time it happens, it is hard to miss. A cluster of dumplings gets sucked together, there is a puff of steam, and "MEGA BAO!" pops up over a big round bun that bounces onto the street.

Merges look like luck at first. They are not. A few simple rules decide when they happen, and once you know them you can make far more of them. This Dumpling Dash MEGA BAO guide explains those rules, what the big buns are actually good at, and the habits that turn a run with one or two merges into a run with a whole squad. If you have never played, our beginner's guide covers the basics first.

What is a MEGA BAO?

In Dumpling Dash you hold anywhere on the screen to steam small dumplings out of a bamboo steamer, and drag to steer them up the street toward a chopstick fortress.

A MEGA BAO is what you get when eight of those small dumplings merge into one. It is more than twice as wide as a normal dumpling, rolls instead of hopping, and is the strongest piece you can have on the street.

Two things surprise new players:

  • You do not lose any crowd. A MEGA BAO still counts as eight, so the number above your crowd stays the same after a merge.
  • It is stronger than the eight that made it. Its toughness is more than the eight dumplings added together, so merging is always a gain, never a trade.

The merge rules, in plain words

The game checks for merges several times a second. A merge happens when all of these are true:

  1. Eight small dumplings are packed close together. They need to be touching or nearly touching. A spread-out line will not do it, however long it is.
  2. They are a little way up the street. Dumplings that have only just popped out of the steamer do not merge yet. They need a moment of running first.
  3. No tiny spoon is active. The tiny spoon pickup shrinks your dumplings, and while it lasts no merges happen at all.
  4. There is a short gap since the last merge. New MEGA BAOs arrive one after another, about two a second at most, not all at once.

There is also a ceiling: the game allows up to fourteen MEGA BAOs on the street at once. In normal play you rarely reach it, but if you do, new merges wait until one of your big buns has gone into the fight.

One bonus for very big crowds: when the street gets packed, extra dumplings join a nearby dumpling instead of adding more bodies to the screen, and once one of them is carrying eight, it turns into a MEGA BAO too. The crowd number still shows your real total.

What a MEGA BAO is good at

Knowing its strengths tells you when a merge really matters.

A Dumpling Dash crowd of 111 reaches the red fortress, which is breaking apart, with three big white MEGA BAOs at the front and a curved line of small dumplings behind them
Big buns at the front hit the fortress much harder than small dumplings.
  • It flattens chopstick soldiers. When a MEGA BAO meets a chopstick soldier, the soldier is squashed flat on the spot and the bao only loses a little toughness. Small dumplings have to fight them one by one.
  • It shrugs off chopstick volleys. The fortress throws chopsticks that land where a shadow appears on the street. A volley knocks out small dumplings straight away, but it only dents a MEGA BAO.
  • It hits the fortress and bosses harder. A MEGA BAO does extra damage when it reaches the fortress or a boss, much more than its eight dumplings would on their own.
  • It is sturdy against obstacles. A rolling pin or noodle wall still stops a MEGA BAO, but the bao takes a big chunk of the obstacle's strength with it.

The bigger fork brutes are the exception. They are tough enough that a MEGA BAO has to fight them like any other dumpling, just with a lot more strength behind it.

What a MEGA BAO cannot do

Two limits shape how you should play:

  • Gates ignore it. A MEGA BAO walks through ×2, ×3 and + gates without being copied. Red gates do not take from it either. Gates only work on small dumplings.
  • It is slower. MEGA BAOs roll more slowly than small dumplings run, so the small ones overtake them and reach the soldiers first.

So the best runs have both: a dense stream of small dumplings to multiply at the gates, and a steady supply of MEGA BAOs forming from that stream to do the heavy hitting. Our gate tips help with the first half.

Five ways to make more MEGA BAOs

  1. Keep holding. Merges need dumplings packed close, and a steady stream is the easiest way to get that. Every time you let go, the stream stops and the gap means fewer clusters.
  2. Stay still while you steam. Each dumpling runs straight on from where it left the steamer, so a still steamer stacks them in one lane. Small, slow drags beat big swipes. Our guide on keeping your crowd tight goes deeper on this.
  3. Upgrade fire rate. Fire rate makes the steamer push dumplings out faster, so more of them land in the same space. It is the upgrade that helps merges most directly.
  4. Take chili oil, skip the tiny spoon. Chili oil makes the steamer fire faster for a while, which packs the stream even tighter. The tiny spoon blocks merges while it lasts, so steer around it when you safely can.
  5. Multiply a tight crowd. A ×2 or ×3 gate pops new dumplings out right beside the old ones. If your crowd is tight going in, the copies land close together and merges follow quickly after the gate.

MEGA BAOs on boss levels

Every 10th level a boss such as the Giant Fork or the Wok Golem walks toward your steamer instead of waiting at the fortress. This is where MEGA BAOs earn their keep.

Level 10 in Dumpling Dash: the Giant Fork boss with angry eyes stands in front of the red fortress while a crowd of 44, led by a big golden MEGA BAO and a white one, runs toward it
On boss levels the crowd gathers toward the boss on its own.

As your crowd gets near the boss, the dumplings drift toward it by themselves, so you do not need to aim precisely. What matters is how much strength arrives. A few MEGA BAOs hitting the boss do far more than a thin trickle of small dumplings.

Before a boss level you might be offered the Instant Bao boost, which starts the level with a MEGA BAO already on the street. It is also one of the optional rewards you can take for watching a short video. Either way, it is never required to win.

Merges and the DIM SUM RUSH meter

Every merge also adds to your combo and to the DIM SUM RUSH meter. When the meter is full, your small dumplings turn golden for a few seconds, run faster and hit harder. A MEGA BAO that forms from golden dumplings during a rush comes out golden too.

That makes merges doubly useful: each one gives you a strong bun now and brings the next rush closer.

FAQ

How many dumplings make a MEGA BAO in Dumpling Dash?

Eight. When eight small dumplings are packed closely together a little way up the street, they squish into one MEGA BAO. It still counts as eight in your crowd number.

Why are my dumplings not merging?

Usually the crowd is too spread out, so no eight dumplings are close enough. It can also be the tiny spoon pickup, which stops all merges while it lasts. Hold steady, drag less and avoid the spoon.

Do gates multiply MEGA BAOs?

No. A MEGA BAO walks through every gate unchanged, good or bad. Gates only copy or remove small dumplings, so keep a stream of small ones flowing for the gates.

Is a MEGA BAO stronger than eight separate dumplings?

Yes. It is tougher than the eight dumplings put together, flattens chopstick soldiers on contact, survives chopstick volleys that would knock out small dumplings, and hits the fortress and bosses harder.

How do I start a level with a MEGA BAO?

Pick the Instant Bao boost when it is offered before a level. It drops a ready-made MEGA BAO onto the street as the level begins.
